This year I was delighted to be able to attend the 3rd Annual BillyCross Race. (This was my second year in attendance)
What is BillyCross you ask? It’s a bicycle race, a hill-billy costumed bicycle race.
So what makes this race special?
It’s off road, through farm land…hilly, muddy farm land.
After the leader finishes his first lap, the clock starts and the cyclists have 30 minutes to do as many laps as they can. Whoever has the most laps wins. So what? – that’s boring right?
Well, yeah, until you learn that there’s a “whiskey short-cut”.
If you want to shave some time off a lap, you take the whiskey short-cut. Take a shot, go left, save time. Pass on the short-cut, go right and all the way around the turnip field.
All that biking and booze though, you have to be careful, you don’t know when it will catch up with you!
Also, he who has the best costume, steals the show!
And yes, they rode the tandem trike off-road for the entire race!
Afterwards, there’s awards, refreshments and a bonfire.
