I had every intention of posting about the garden and the berry picking/canning-palooza last week but then life happened.
My mom came up to help me pick berries and can, which was excellent and so much fun. But because my mom was coming to visit I spent Sunday picking up supplies for canning and then cleaning our home. So, no time to post about the garden.
Then on Monday we got out to picking and our eyes were bigger than our self-control. We ended up picking 25 pounds of blueberries and then proceeded to pick 30 pounds of tart cherries. That’s a lot. It’s a lot because then we had to go home and preserve it all. Do you know how long it takes to pit 30 pounds of cherries?!?
We ended up working in the kitchen until 1 am and then getting up early to finish by afternoon before I had to get to work on Tuesday. All totaled, there was a quadruple batch of cherry pie filling, a five time batch of blueberry pie filling. A double batch of blueberry jam and a batch of sour cherry jam to show for all our efforts.
It was worth it, we had fun and some nice vittles to show for it but man, oh man were we tired. In fact, I think it has caught up to me because I’ve been tired all week and I had to call out from work today because I was sick from a migraine and what is probably a stomach bug. Let’s just say I’m happy I only had fruit for breakfast. I’d like to post more, I certainly took enough pictures, but this is all I can handle for tonight as my headache is starting to creep back up on me. Bleh.
