I have to warn you in advance…I’ve got a million thoughts running around in my head right now and wanted to get some of it out into the blog. Here’s a little update on what I’m doing right now.
I am finally getting a move on in terms of setting up house for the bundle of joy. I haven’t given much time to getting anything done, up until now, though I have given it a lot of thought. We haven’t purchased or brought home any furniture yet, but I have lined up several key pieces.
So far I’ve got a glider/ottoman set from a friend of my mother. I have a dresser that will also double as a changing table. My dad is tweaking the dresser (which used to belong to his parents) so that it is taller, by about 6 inches (no one wants to have to hunch to change a stinky diaper). A lovely friend who is having a boy in October is giving me a diaper changing tray and pad that will sit on top of the dresser. Thanks L! She is also sending a matress my way. The only piece of furniture still not nailed down is the crib. We may have a line on a used one from a friend’s neighbor, but if that falls through, we plan on purchasing a basic crib from IKEA. And that’s it. (For furniture)
I’ve gotten our registry loaded up with basics, but all in all, it doesn’t seem like a lot of stuff. The biggest part of the registry puzzle was figuring out which brands to select. My friend S gave us a great book called Baby Bargains which offers up a lot of information and some serious advice – I highly recommend.
S also gave me a bunch of maternity clothes when I went to visit her and her beautiful twin boys that were born at the end of July. So precious! Some friends cannot be thanked enough for their kindness, generosity and guidance – S is one of them! I only wish we lived closer.
Today, I received a box full of newborn clothes from my brother-in-law’s neighbors. They had twin boys almost 2 years ago and they gladly gave me a diaper box full of baby boy clothes. And let me tell you – that box was slam full of newborn outfits. Check out this mountain of clothes – all for the first 3 months!!!
The clothes are stacked higher than the laundry basket behind it, to give you an idea of scale. The very generous neighbor was great – she also gave me some blankets, burp clothes, a baby carrier and a shopping cart cover! I cannot tell you how very blessed I feel when someone is willing to just give us so much good quality baby gear!
Now that the registry is all set up on Amazon, I feel more prepared and organized. It’s as if I know what I still need to look out for deals on and what I can stop worring about – like diaper covers, I finally settled on a style and added what I will need to the list. Now I just need to figure out how to get a couple of months of diaper service added to the registry and I’ll be set. (The cost of the diaper service for us is going to be about the same as it would cost for me to wash diapers in the coin-op laundy in the basement. For the first few months we are going to opt for the service to take one chore/task off the list of things to keep up with while we are adjusting to life with a baby)
On a much more fun note – I’ve started on the nursery items. While I have decided against a crib bumper for safety reasons, there are other items that need to be made. I am about 1/2 way completed on the baby’s quilt and will either make a wall hanging or a second coordinating quilt with the extra supplies I have that were puchased for making the bumper. Here’s a little peek at the process so far.
