With six days left to the baby’s estimated due date I’m keeping myself busy. I’ve been trying to think of all the things I want to get done before he arrives.
Right now I’m kicking myself. I thought I had a “before” picture of the table I just refinished. I really had myself convinced that I did, and so, did not check to make sure that I had one. Of course, now that I want to show you the “after”, I cannot locate a “before”. Grumble.
The table came from my father in law. It was previously used as a plant table by the hubs’ grandmother. Unfortunately the table sustained some pretty serious water damage because of the plants. This rickety little side table was sitting in the FIL’s basement collecting dust. I asked him if I could take it home and he told me to suit myself, though it looked awful. Well, right before the hubs and I went to Alaska for the summer of 2010 I started sanding the table down in the hopes of restaining it. Fast forward to last week, it remained half sanded and collecting dust in my basement. I pulled the table out last week when my parents were in town, thinking that the table would be perfect in the baby’s room next to the rocking chair.
The most unseasonable weather two days ago presented itself as the perfect opportunity to finish sanding down the table. I could not, try as I might, remove all of the water damage and stains from the top, it goes too deep and I didn’t want to go through the entire top veneer, but the end result is a vast improvement.
Rather than using some pretty smelly stains or varnish with 9 months pregnant I opted for a Tung Oil finish. (still smelly, but less so). I finished the second coating of Tung Oil this afternoon and it’s airing out on the deck right now, I will bring it into the baby’s room tomorrow.
Now we’ll have some place to put a lamp and a beverage while rocking the baby.
Last night the hubs and I enjoyed his day off together. We realized that it might be the last day off of his with just the two of us. We tried to make it as nice and relaxing as possible. We went to lunch at our favorite Pho place, the weather, cold and rainy, made it the perfect day for Pho. Then we made dinner together. Sockeye Salmon with cucumber, dill, yogurt sauce and veggie quinoa pilaf. Spinach salad with roasted beet, walnuts and goat’s milk blue cheese from local Firefly Farms. Delicious!!
Also great about this meal was that it was pretty healthy. Relatively low in carbohydrates – perfect for the prediabetes diet the hubs is trying to adhere to. (if you look closely, behind my amarylis plants, you can see my latest batch of yogurt wrapped up in towels at the end of the table – incubating)
Tonight, to stay busy, I’m going to an ornament swap with my sister in law, should be fun. I’m bringing bacon wrapped-brown sugar-cocktail weenies. If I get a chance tomorrow, I’ll post about them – so simple and really the best finger food to take to a party!
