The Hubs and I really want to make sure that our son has a love for reading like we do. I’ve been reading to him since he was born and he sees me read frequently – like when I’m nursing him or when he’s playing on his blanket and mom takes a moment. We just signed him up at the library for a summer baby reading program and we just checked out about 20 books for him. The books included some board books and some classics. My only concern right now is that G wants to really tear into everything right now and put everything in his mouth. I cringe to think where these children’s books have been so far. Eww. So needless to say, I have to be hyper-vigilant with him while we read the library books. G usually gets his pacifier during story time.
Jump to today. Baby G and I had some time to kill today while we waited for some prints to be enlarged at the pharmacy photo counter. We walked over to the local boutique toy store to browse. My intention was simply to look – not buy. (Like that ever actually happens!) Of course, I got some great ideas for toys to add to his wish list. But as I was finishing up I spotted some books and I decided to check them out since children’s books are really on my mind right now. There were some great board books by an author named Puck, specifically “Foodie ABCs”, right up our alley, but then something else caught my eye. The word “Indestructible” at the top of a display rack. Brightly colored books – very flat, they almost looked like little magazines. I picked one up and flipped through it – great pictures and lots of color and no words or silly rhymes, so you can make your own story. At the top of the book it claims – Chew Proof, Rip Proof, Nontoxic, 100% Washable.
Well, that got my attention, so you know what I did? I opened the book up and showed the pictures to G, his face lit up and his breathing got excited and he kicked his feet! So I handed the “Wiggle! March!” book to baby G. He instantly loved it. His little hands when to rubbing the pages back and forth, they feel kind of slippery-smooth. Next he put it in his mouth and happily gummed it (obviously, at this point, I had decided to buy this one). I sorted through the rest of the display. Each book was bright and energetic. Some had pictures of bugs, animals or birds, others were based on nursery rhymes. I picked up another “Baby Babble” because it had several images of dogs in it, G loves dogs! I have to say I am impressed. G loves these new books. After a day they are crunched and wrinkled and floppy now, but amazingly enough have really stood the test. None of his board books make it out unscathed after unsupervised play. The Indestructibles can be smoothed out pretty well so that they will lay flat (flat-ish) and they are definitely washable. This is also the first toy G has had that he will cause him to cry after he has dropped it. It’s love at first sight/taste, I’m so glad it’s a book!
These are perfect first baby books! Check it out, go get some, put them in shower gifts! www.indestructiblesinc.com
